Tuesday, March 3, 2026 at 03:40 AM

Altera has announced partnerships with NEC and Broadcom to facilitate the development of high-performance wireless solutions, likely leveraging Altera's FPGA technology integrated within broader telecommunications infrastructure and semiconductor ecosystems.

Context

Altera has strengthened its position in the wireless supply chain through strategic collaborations with Broadcom and NEC, announced at Mobile World Congress 2026. The partnership with Broadcom successfully validated interoperability between Altera’s Agilex 7 FPGAs and the BroadPeak SoC platform, achieving a high-throughput of 32.44 Gbps. This milestone supports the transition to 5G-Advanced and early 6G architectures, offering the scalability required for massive MIMO configurations up to 128T128R. Simultaneously, Altera and NEC co-developed a 5G Massive MIMO radio unit that reduces power consumption by more than 40% while boosting throughput for Open RAN deployments. These collaborations signal a tightening integration between specialized silicon and programmable hardware, essential for meeting the energy and performance demands of AI-enhanced telecommunications. This positioning allows equipment manufacturers to accelerate time-to-market for future-ready, high-capacity radio platforms while meeting stringent thermal and efficiency constraints.
