Renesas Electronics has detailed a new Ternary Content Addressable Memory (TCAM) technology designed for automotive SoCs. The technology focuses on achieving high density and low power consumption specifically for vehicle applications, signaling a potential shift in standard architectures for automotive silicon.
Context
At the ISSCC 2026 conference in San Francisco, Renesas Electronics (TSE:6723) detailed a breakthrough in ternary content-addressable memory (TCAM) built on a 3nm FinFET process. This configurable technology is specifically designed for the next generation of automotive SoCs, addressing the critical need for high-speed packet classification in software-defined vehicles (SDVs). By combining hard macros with tool-driven soft-macro auto-generation, Renesas achieved an industry-leading memory density of 5.27 Mb/mm², a significant leap for power-constrained automotive environments.
The new architecture delivers a 71.1% reduction in search energy through a two-stage pipelined search that halts unnecessary processing. Operating at a 1.7 GHz search clock, the technology provides the low-latency performance required for 5G networking and edge computing. Beyond efficiency, the design incorporates a split odd/even data bus to ensure ISO 26262 functional safety compliance, enabling the memory to correct double-bit errors that traditional schemes often miss. This positioning allows Renesas to capture a larger share of the TCAM market, which is projected to reach $4.24 billion by 2033.
