Sunday, March 15, 2026 at 08:06 PM
A retrospective on the decade-long tenure of Sony Semiconductor Solutions Chairman Terushi Shimizu and the segment's evolution into a primary driver of the group's business, focusing on the strategic growth of image sensor manufacturing and semiconductor operations.
Context
Following his decade-long tenure, Sony Semiconductor Solutions (SSS) Chairman Terushi Shimizu recently reflected on transforming the division from a supporting component arm into a core pillar of the Sony Group. Under his leadership, the unit evolved into the global leader in image sensors, currently commanding a 53% market share by revenue as of CY2023, with a strategic goal to reach 60% by CY2025. This growth has been driven by a shift from purely mobile applications to high-growth sectors including automotive sensing and AI-integrated vision systems.
During a retrospective featured in the Nikkei, Shimizu characterized the semiconductor division as the new protagonist of "Technology's Sony." He noted that the business, which commercialized Japan's first transistors in 1954, has moved beyond the shadows of consumer electronics to drive group-wide profitability. In Q3 FY2025, the Imaging & Sensing Solutions segment contributed to a 22% surge in Sony's overall operating income, underscoring its role as a primary earnings driver.
Looking ahead to the FY2024–FY2026 mid-range plan, Sony is prioritizing "growth with profitability" by expanding into the automotive market, where it targets a 43% revenue share by FY2026. Recent innovations, such as the IMX828 automotive sensor and the LYTIA 901 mobile sensor with built-in AI, demonstrate the company's focus on high-margin, intelligent silicon that integrates sensing and processing at the edge.
