Intel to release Panther Lake commercial processors to regain market share

Wednesday, March 25, 2026 at 01:04 PM

Intel plans to launch its Core Ultra Series 3 'Panther Lake' processors for the commercial PC market, featuring vPro security and management capabilities. The company intends to leverage this product to recover market share in the business computing segment.

Context

Intel is preparing to launch its Core Ultra Series 3, code-named Panther Lake, in an effort to regain market share lost to AMD and Arm. An Intel executive told CRN that the company is "well positioned" to win back the commercial PC segment with these new chips. This push follows a challenging period where AMD reached a record-high 29.2% overall x86 CPU market share in late 2025, fueled by Intel’s internal supply constraints and manufacturing delays. Under the leadership of CEO Lip-Bu Tan, the company is now prioritizing high-volume production of the Intel 18A process node to support this comeback. Technically, Panther Lake represents a major leap as the first client platform built on the 18A node. The processors are expected to deliver over 50% better multi-threaded CPU performance and up to 60% better power efficiency compared to previous generations like Lunar Lake. By positioning these as vPro-eligible commercial processors, Intel aims to capitalize on the ongoing Windows refresh cycle. High-volume shipments are scheduled to ramp up throughout 2026, serving as a critical test for Intel’s new "customer-first" engineering culture and its ability to maintain a steady yearly release cadence.
