Nikon to Launch Contract Development for Perovskite Solar Cells and Establish New Base
Friday, December 5, 2025 at 07:22 AM
Nikon is expanding its business by beginning contract development for advanced technologies, including next-generation perovskite solar cells, and is setting up a new operational base for this effort.
Context
Nikon is expanding its footprint in advanced materials by launching a new contract development lab, S3S LAB, within its Sagamihara manufacturing site, with operations commencing on December 10th. This facility will focus on developing film-type, flexible electronic prototypes, including next-generation perovskite solar cells, displays, and sensors. The initiative leverages Nikon's newly developed Roll to Roll maskless exposure equipment, designed for precise patterning on flexible substrates. This strategic move aims to capture demand for low-cost prototyping and subsequently drive equipment sales as clients scale production.
Before its official opening, the S3S LAB has already secured approximately 20 prototype development projects, including one with Kyoto University spinout EneCoat Technologies. This demonstrates early market traction and positions Nikon to become a key enabler in the burgeoning flexible electronics and renewable energy sectors. The company's approach is to transition from contract development to selling its specialized exposure equipment, capitalizing on its expertise in precision manufacturing.
