GE Vernova discusses ramping up gas turbine production for AI data centers with Trump administration
Wednesday, January 28, 2026 at 05:35 PM
GE Vernova is engaged in frequent discussions with the Trump administration regarding the acceleration of natural gas turbine production to support the energy requirements of AI data centers.
Context
GE Vernova is collaborating with the Trump administration to scale natural gas turbine production as part of a federal push to mandate that tech giants fund their own "behind-the-meter" power for AI data centers. This policy shift aims to shield residential consumers from rising costs by requiring hyperscalers to secure dedicated baseload capacity through emergency auctions. The move directly benefits equipment manufacturers by bypassing grid-connection bottlenecks and creating a "seller’s market" for reliable, on-demand energy infrastructure.
The company’s order book reflects this transition, with gas equipment orders tripling in the final quarter of 2025. GE Vernova anticipates an 80 GW backlog by the end of this year, with manufacturing capacity slated to reach 20 GW annually by mid-2026 and 24 GW by 2028. Major partnerships, including a 4 GW off-grid venture with Chevron, highlight the shift toward private power ecosystems intended to ensure schedule certainty for AI buildouts through 2030.
