JX Metals implements freight rail transport for semiconductor sputtering targets to Kyushu
Wednesday, March 4, 2026 at 06:40 AM
JX Metals has initiated the transport of sputtering targets used in semiconductor manufacturing from Ibaraki Prefecture to Kyushu via freight rail to optimize supply chain logistics.
Context
JX Metals has launched full-scale freight rail transport for semiconductor sputtering targets from its Isohara Works in Ibaraki to Kyushu as of March 2026. This shift follows a successful trial in January 2026 and is designed to mitigate Japan’s chronic truck driver shortages while reducing Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions. By transitioning to rail via Hitachi Station, the company secures a more resilient supply chain for the high-purity materials essential to the advanced semiconductor manufacturing clusters currently expanding in Kyushu.
Logistical stability is critical for JX Metals, which currently controls 60% of the global market for sputtering targets. These materials are indispensable for the intricate wiring required in high-performance logic and memory chips used in AI servers. Following its $3 billion IPO in March 2025, which reduced parent ENEOS Holdings’ stake to 42.4%, the company has prioritized operational independence and sustainability. This logistics pivot ensures reliable, low-carbon delivery to global giants like TSMC and Intel, directly supporting the foundational infrastructure for generative AI.
