Reports indicate that iPhone production in India increased by 53% year-over-year, reaching 55 million units. This shift signifies that approximately 25% of all iPhones are now manufactured in India as Apple diversifies its manufacturing footprint away from China to mitigate risks from US tariffs and supply chain instability.

Context

In a major shift for the global electronics supply chain, Apple has ramped up its manufacturing in India to reach 25% of its total global iPhone production as of 2025. The company assembled approximately 55 million units in the country last year, representing a significant 53% increase from the 36 million units produced in 2024. This expansion indicates that India is now responsible for one in every four iPhones produced worldwide, a milestone that aligns with earlier analyst projections regarding Apple’s diversification strategy. This pivot is primarily driven by the need to de-risk operations away from China amid escalating US-China trade tensions and the imposition of heavy tariffs. To support this transition, Apple has integrated 45 companies into its Indian supply chain, including major domestic firms like Tata Electronics. Furthermore, for the first time, the company is now assembling its entire current lineup—including the high-end iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max models—within India, signaling the country's growing maturity as a high-tech manufacturing hub.
