American Electric Power doubles 2030 contracted load forecast to 56 gigawatts

American Electric Power has doubled its 2030 forecast for large-load contracted additions to 56 gigawatts, up from a previous guidance of 28 gigawatts. This surge highlights the massive infrastructure demand for transmission and generation needed to support the scaling of AI data centers and industrial power requirements.
Context
American Electric Power (AEP) recently shocked the market by doubling its 2030 contracted large-load forecast to 56 gigawatts (GW), up from just 28 GW projected in late 2025. This massive revision, announced during the company's February 2026 earnings call, is driven primarily by an unprecedented surge in demand from AI-focused data centers and industrial "hyperscalers." Data centers now account for nearly 90% of the company’s large-load pipeline, particularly across high-growth regions like Texas, Ohio, and Indiana.
The scale of this demand is most visible in AEP Texas, where the contracted load pipeline nearly tripled to 36 GW in a single quarter. To support this "generational load growth phenomenon," American Electric Power is exploring $5 billion to $8 billion in incremental capital investments beyond its existing $72 billion five-year base plan. Investors are closely monitoring the company's ability to accelerate transmission and generation delivery, supported by new "take-or-pay" tariffs designed to secure cost recovery and protect existing ratepayer stability.
