Wednesday, December 10, 2025 at 11:40 AM

Mitsui Chemicals has successfully developed a 12-inch version of its "Diffrar" optical resin wafer, which is intended for use in Augmented Reality (AR) glasses applications, indicating progress in advanced display materials.

Context

Mitsui Chemicals announced on December 10, 2025, the successful development of "Diffrar," the world's first 12-inch optical polymer wafer for Augmented Reality (AR) glasses. This innovation features high refractive indices of 1.67 and 1.74, significantly advancing the AR supply chain by offering enhanced manufacturing efficiency for optical designers and a wider Field of View (FOV) for users. The proprietary polymer used in Diffrar™ wafers makes AR devices safer and lighter than traditional glass components, improving impact resistance and enabling more comfortable, extended wear. This development by Mitsui Chemicals is poised to accelerate the growth of the augmented and virtual reality markets. Building on collaborations with companies like Dispelix, Mitsui Chemicals plans to showcase these new Diffrar™ wafers at the SPIE Photonics West-AR/VR/MR Expo from January 20-22, 2026, signaling readiness for broader market engagement.
