Oracle clarifies AI data center construction and operational standards following media reports

Oracle issued a public statement clarifying that recent media coverage regarding their data center construction and operational practices is inaccurate and demonstrates a misunderstanding of AI infrastructure deployment.

Context

Oracle recently issued a public clarification to refute media reports claiming the cancellation or failure of its Stargate AI data center project in Abilene, Texas. Bloomberg and Reuters had reported that plans to expand the facility with OpenAI were scrapped due to financing hurdles and changing requirements. Oracle countered these reports, stating that it and developer Crusoe are operating in lockstep to deliver one of the world’s largest AI data centers. The company confirmed that two buildings at the Abilene site are already operational and that its broader agreement to provide 4.5 gigawatts of capacity for OpenAI remains on track. This infrastructure is critical to supporting Oracle’s growing backlog, which saw Remaining Performance Obligations surge 438% to $523 billion in FY2026 Q2. During a December 2025 earnings call, Oracle co-CEO Clay Magouyrk addressed the complexity of these builds, stating, "a lot of people don’t understand" the various options available to Oracle as it finances and constructs capacity for the world's largest AI model providers. This push for clarity comes as Oracle aggressively expands its footprint with additional sites planned in Michigan, New Mexico, and Wisconsin. Despite the reported friction in Texas, Oracle maintains that its capital expenditure strategy is designed to meet the unprecedented demand from key partners like NVIDIA and Meta, while utilizing its unique position as a provider of both integrated application suites and high-performance bare metal GPU clusters.
