Bytedance Launches AI Agent in Partnership with ZTE Smartphone

Tuesday, December 2, 2025 at 11:20 AM

Bytedance has reportedly launched its new AI agent product integrated with a specific ZTE smartphone model, signaling a new partnership in the mobile AI space.

Context

On December 1, 2025, tech giant ByteDance launched its Doubao AI voice assistant through a strategic partnership with smartphone maker ZTE. The agent, which is powered by ByteDance's Doubao large language model, debuted on a ZTE Nubia M153 engineering prototype phone priced at CNY 3,499 (approximately US$495). This move is significant as it represents a deep software integration at the operating system level, not just a standalone application, enabling the AI to perform complex tasks like booking tickets and managing orders across different apps. This partnership provides ByteDance a critical entry into the competitive on-device AI market, bypassing larger rivals like Apple, Huawei, and Xiaomi that are developing their own in-house AI systems. The scale of the launch, with an initial stock of 500,000 units, indicates a serious market test rather than a small-scale experiment. The initial batch of phones sold out quickly, signaling strong consumer interest in advanced AI capabilities. ByteDance has stated it has no plans to build its own phones but is actively in talks with multiple other manufacturers, positioning Doubao as a key third-party AI solution for the wider smartphone industry.
