Applied Optoelectronics (AAOI) has secured an upsized $71 million order for 800G single-mode data center transceivers from a major hyperscale customer. This follow-on order, announced in April 2026, more than doubles the existing backlog from this specific client, bringing the total order value to $124 million since mid-March. The surge in demand is primarily driven by the rapid buildout of AI-driven workloads and GPU clusters, which require high-bandwidth optical interconnects to reduce latency and power consumption.
Management expects to begin deliveries for both the initial $53 million order and this new $71 million expansion in the second quarter of 2026. The initial order is slated for completion by the third quarter, while the upsized portion is scheduled to be fulfilled by year-end 2026. This momentum follows AAOI's recent shipment of 10,000 units of 800G transceivers to a separate hyperscale customer, signaling a broad acceleration in the transition to 800G and 1.6T networking architectures.
