SoftBank's Chief Financial Officer stated that the company has committed to investing up to $30 billion within the current fiscal year ending March 2025, focusing on capital deployment while valuations remain favorable.

Context

SoftBank Group CFO Yoshimitsu Goto has confirmed a strategic $30 billion investment in OpenAI, a move finalized during the 2025 fiscal year to cement the firm’s lead in the AI supply chain. The commitment was initially set in March 2025, when OpenAI carried a valuation of $260 billion. By October 2025, the startup’s valuation skyrocketed to $500 billion following a massive secondary share sale, nearly doubling SoftBank’s implicit paper gains in just seven months. This capital injection is the primary engine behind the Stargate Project, a $500 billion infrastructure initiative between SoftBank and OpenAI designed to build 10 gigawatts of AI data center capacity. By securing an 11% stake in the ChatGPT creator, SoftBank has pivoted its portfolio toward Artificial Super Intelligence (ASI). The group now directs roughly 60% of its assets toward AI-related semiconductors and infrastructure, positioning itself as a critical financier for the next generation of global computing power.
