Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL) is reportedly selling its battery energy storage systems (BESS) at a price point of $75 per kilowatt-hour.

Context

Global battery leader CATL has significantly disrupted the energy storage market by offering battery energy storage systems (BESS) at approximately $75 per kWh, a move that reflects a near 50% price drop year-over-year. This aggressive pricing strategy is fueled by LFP (lithium iron phosphate) chemistry advancements and a massive scale-up in manufacturing, highlighted by the company’s recent launch of the TENER Stack, a 9MWh ultra-large capacity solution. By driving costs down to levels where renewable storage becomes an economically superior choice to diesel and fossil fuels, CATL is accelerating the transition toward zero-carbon grids. The company has already moved its next-generation 587-Ah high-capacity cells into mass commercialization, projecting 3 GWh in shipments for the current cycle. This price reduction is critical for AI-driven data centers and industrial electrification projects requiring large-scale, cost-effective energy density. Timing is pivotal as CATL recently completed its Hong Kong Stock Exchange listing in May 2025 to deepen its integration into global capital markets. Despite rising geopolitical tariffs and trade scrutiny, the firm continues to dominate the supply chain with recovery rates of 99% for critical materials like nickel and cobalt, ensuring a circular and resilient production model.
