Arm launches new Physical AI division to target robotics and automotive sectors
Thursday, January 8, 2026 at 11:48 AM
Arm has established a new Physical AI business unit focused on the robotics sector. This initiative aims to integrate Arm's computing architecture more deeply into automated manufacturing and automotive systems as the industry shifts toward hardware-level AI capabilities.
Context
Arm Holdings launched its new Physical AI division at CES 2026, marking a major reorganization into three core business lines: Cloud and AI, Edge, and the newly formed unit combining robotics and automotive. Led by Executive Vice President Drew Henry, the division aims to capture surging demand for humanoid and industrial robots. This move follows a 25% increase in royalty revenue for Q1 FYE26, as the company shifts focus from its traditional smartphone dominance toward high-growth, embodied AI applications.
The decision to merge automotive and robotics stems from shared technical requirements for power efficiency, safety, and reliability. Arm already dominates the vehicle sector, powering over 65% of ADAS and 85% of in-vehicle infotainment systems. By consolidating these efforts, the firm targets higher-value licensing for complete chip designs rather than just core architecture. This strategic pivot allows Arm to monetize the next wave of automation while supporting a diverse ecosystem that includes leaders like Boston Dynamics.
