SK hynix is accelerating its production timeline by moving up the equipment installation at its M15X fab in Cheongju by two months. This strategic acceleration aims to secure a dominant position in the High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) market as competition intensifies.

Context

On March 23, 2026, SK Hynix announced it has pulled forward the equipment move-in for the second cleanroom at its M15X fab in Cheongju by two months. Originally scheduled for May, the installation began in March 2026 to accelerate the production of HBM4 and high-capacity DRAM. This move is a strategic response to surging demand from Nvidia for its next-generation Rubin AI platform. With the first cleanroom having already begun wafer input in February 2026, the facility is now entering its final preparation stage for full-scale operations. The M15X plant represents a 20 trillion won ($14.6 billion) investment designed to solidify SK Hynix's leadership in the AI memory market. Once fully operational, the fab is expected to add up to 90,000 wafers per month to the company's total production capacity. By accelerating this timeline, SK Hynix aims to preemptively secure a 70% market share in the HBM4 segment while defending its position against rivals like Samsung Electronics and Micron ahead of the completion of the Yongin Semiconductor Cluster in 2027.
