STMicroelectronics launches GaN IC platform for motion control

Monday, December 1, 2025 at 07:40 AM

STMicroelectronics announced a new Gallium Nitride (GaN) IC platform designed for motion control applications, specifically targeting improved energy efficiency in home appliances.

Context

STMicroelectronics is expanding the use of high-efficiency Gallium Nitride (GaN) technology beyond power adapters into the larger motor control market. The company launched its GaNSPIN platform, a new family of integrated circuits designed to improve energy ratings and performance in home appliances like washing machines and industrial systems such as pumps and fans. This move positions STMicroelectronics to capture a new segment where GaN's benefits of smaller size and lower energy loss are increasingly critical for meeting stringent eco-design norms. The first products, GANSPIN611 and GANSPIN612, are system-in-package solutions targeting motors up to 400 Watts. They integrate 650V GaN transistors and drivers into a compact 9mm x 9mm package, which can reduce board size by up to 60%. With the GANSPIN611 already in production as of November 2025 and priced from $4.44, STMicroelectronics is making an aggressive commercial push to displace traditional silicon chips in cost-sensitive, high-volume applications.
