Bernstein reports that Google has already begun shipping its TPU v8 AI accelerators, representing the latest generation of its custom silicon infrastructure.

Context

Bernstein reports that Google has already begun shipping its eighth-generation AI silicon, the TPU v8, significantly ahead of the industry's expected late 2026 mass production schedule. Developed on a cutting-edge 3nm process in partnership with Broadcom, the TPU v8 follows the recently deployed Trillium (v6) and Ironwood (v7) architectures. This rapid deployment signals an acceleration in Google's strategy to build out massive, vertically integrated AI infrastructure to support next-generation trillion-parameter models. The rollout serves as a strategic challenge to NVIDIA, as Bernstein analysts estimate Google’s custom chips offer roughly 4x performance per dollar over current-generation GPUs when accounting for acquisition costs. Shipping volume is projected to reach 5 million units by 2027, with the potential for Google to supply external partners like Meta. By controlling its own silicon stack, Google secures a substantial cost advantage that protects margins as AI training expenses continue to rise.
