Wednesday, February 4, 2026 at 11:59 AM
Newmo and Macnica have announced a partnership to develop autonomous driving test vehicles, aiming to commercialize self-driving taxi services in Japan. The collaboration focuses on the development and verification of autonomous driving hardware and systems integration for future ride-sharing applications.
Context
Mobility startup Newmo has partnered with technology solutions provider Macnica to accelerate the development of autonomous driving taxi fleets in Japan. Announced in February 2026, the collaboration focuses on engineering experimental vehicles that integrate Macnica’s advanced sensor suites and AI control systems. This partnership is a strategic move to address Japan’s severe driver shortage by industrializing "Japan-originated" robotaxi services through a vertically integrated supply chain.
Macnica serves as a critical link in the AI hardware chain, providing the specialized engineering required to retrofit vehicles with autonomous sensors and real-time data analysis software. This technical depth supports Newmo’s massive operational footprint, which currently spans over 1,000 taxis and 1,500 employees in the Osaka region. By leveraging Macnica’s hardware integration alongside previous software alliances with TIER IV, Newmo aims to transition from pilot testing to commercial deployment, aligning with national goals to establish autonomous transit in 100 locations by 2027.
