The Cabinet Office of Japan has established an AI and Semiconductor Working Group featuring key industry players to coordinate national strategy and manufacturing initiatives.

Context

Japan's Cabinet Office has formally established the AI and Semiconductor Working Group to accelerate domestic technological sovereignty and supply chain resilience. This high-level body includes industry leaders such as Fujitsu, Tokyo Electron, Yaskawa Electric, and ABEJA, alongside the state-backed foundry Rapidus and the University of Tokyo Matsuo Lab. The group is tasked with coordinating a unified "Physical AI" strategy that integrates next-generation chip design with Japan’s traditional strengths in robotics and industrial manufacturing. This initiative coincides with a massive ¥1.23 trillion ($7.9 billion) funding boost for semiconductors and AI in the current fiscal budget. The government has tripled its domestic chip sales target to ¥15 trillion by 2030, supported by TSMC’s recent commitment to manufacture 3-nanometer chips in Kumamoto. For investors, the working group signals a shift toward a more integrated ecosystem where Fujitsu’s infrastructure and Yaskawa Electric’s automation expertise are prioritized to solve labor shortages and secure the global AI supply chain.
