GlobalWafers has secured $200 million in funding from the CHIPS Act to support its manufacturing projects within the United States. This allocation is part of the federal program to strengthen domestic semiconductor supply chains and wafer production capacity.

Context

The U.S. Department of Commerce has finalized a $406 million direct funding award for GlobalWafers under the CHIPS Act, supporting a nearly $4 billion investment in domestic silicon wafer production. This final agreement follows the initial preliminary terms announced in mid-2024 and secures the construction of two new facilities in Sherman, Texas and St. Peters, Missouri. These sites will establish the first U.S. domestic source for 300mm silicon wafers and specialized Silicon-on-Insulator (SOI) wafers, which are critical for high-performance computing, defense, and aerospace applications. As of March 2026, GlobalWafers has already completed the first phase of its Texas facility and is currently evaluating a second expansion phase to meet overwhelming demand from customers like TSMC, Intel, and Micron. This project is expected to create approximately 1,700 construction jobs and 880 permanent manufacturing roles. By localizing the production of raw wafers—roughly 90% of which are currently sourced from East Asia—this investment significantly strengthens the resilience of the U.S. semiconductor supply chain amidst the ongoing AI infrastructure boom.
