Meta is reportedly procuring Google Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) worth hundreds of billions of yen as part of a strategic effort to reduce its reliance on Nvidia hardware for AI infrastructure.

Meta has reportedly entered into a multi-billion dollar agreement with Google to rent and eventually purchase Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) for its AI infrastructure. The deal involves an initial rental phase through Google Cloud, with plans for Meta to begin buying and installing TPUs in its own data centers as soon as next year. This move is part of Meta’s massive $135 billion capital expenditure plan for 2026, aimed at building a more resilient and cost-effective compute supply chain.
The partnership represents a strategic effort to diversify away from Nvidia, whose 75% gross margins and multi-billion dollar investments in Meta rivals like OpenAI and Anthropic have created competitive friction. By adopting TPUs, Meta is also accelerating the "TorchTPU" initiative to ensure deeper integration with PyTorch, the open-source framework it stewards. This collaboration reduces technical barriers for large-scale training, allowing Meta to optimize for scale and long-term profitability as the AI race shifts toward economic efficiency.
