Adeia Initiates Patent Infringement Litigation Against AMD

Monday, December 1, 2025 at 01:34 PM

Adeia has filed a patent infringement lawsuit against semiconductor company AMD. This legal action reports a concrete event in the technology sector.

Context

On November 3, 2025, intellectual property firm Adeia filed two patent infringement lawsuits against chipmaker AMD in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Texas. The litigation asserts 10 patents related to foundational semiconductor technologies, including hybrid bonding and advanced process nodes, which are pioneered by Adeia's predecessor, Tessera. Adeia is seeking unspecified monetary damages and a court order to halt AMD's use of the contested technologies. The lawsuits target the core technology behind AMD's successful 3D V-Cache, which is critical for its high-performance gaming CPUs and advanced AI chips. This creates a significant risk for AMD, potentially impacting sales of key products that have made it a market leader. While an injunction is a threat, Adeia, which was spun off from Xperi in 2022, has a history of settling similar cases and has stated it is open to a "fair and reasonable" licensing arrangement. This suggests a royalty agreement is a more probable outcome than a sales ban.
