Samsung secures European 8nm foundry orders and plans capacity expansion
Tuesday, February 10, 2026 at 07:05 AM
Samsung Electronics is expanding its 8nm foundry customer base in Europe, with German fabless firm Ubitium expected to sign a large-scale mass production contract by March. To meet rising demand for 8nm chips from clients including Nintendo, Intel, and Nvidia, Samsung is considering increasing MPW production runs or allocating dedicated production lines. Intel is specifically expected to source Platform Controller Hub (PCH) chips from Samsung's 8nm lines starting this year.
Context
Samsung Electronics is expanding its European foundry footprint, securing an 8nm mass production contract with German fabless firm Ubitium expected by March. This deal, facilitated by design partner AD Technology, is projected to generate between tens of billions and 100 billion won in revenue. Beyond Ubitium, Samsung is seeing sustained 8nm demand from Nintendo for the Switch 2, Intel for PCH chips, and Nvidia for low-cost GPUs.
This surge highlights the price-to-performance appeal of the 8nm node, prompting Samsung to consider increasing its MPW production runs or dedicating separate lines to meet volume. By strengthening its ecosystem through AD Technology, Samsung is narrowing the gap with TSMC and its design house network led by Global Unichip Corporation (GUC). For investors, this diversification into stable legacy nodes and the European market provides a crucial revenue buffer as the company balances high-end AI chip competition with high-volume mature node orders.
