EPC licenses GaN power semiconductor technology to Renesas following TSMC market shift

Friday, February 13, 2026 at 02:40 AM

Following TSMC's reported withdrawal from certain GaN power semiconductor manufacturing sectors, EPC has entered into a technology licensing agreement with Renesas Electronics to provide GaN technology.

Context

Renesas Electronics has signed a strategic licensing agreement with US-based EPC to broaden its Gallium Nitride (GaN) power semiconductor portfolio. This deal grants Renesas access to EPC’s proprietary low-voltage GaN technology, specifically targeting applications operating under 400V. By filling this technical gap, Renesas strengthens its competitive position in the high-growth power management sector, providing more energy-efficient alternatives to traditional silicon for AI-driven data centers, electric vehicles, and industrial automation. This expansion complements Renesas’ high-voltage expertise established through its $339 million acquisition of Transphorm in 2024. By integrating EPC’s low-voltage capabilities, Renesas now offers a comprehensive, full-spectrum GaN lineup from low to high voltage. Investors should note that this positioning aims to capture a larger share of the global GaN market, which is projected to see significant double-digit growth through 2030. Production and integration of these new designs are expected to ramp up throughout 2026.
