TSMC to decommission 6-inch Fab 2 facility in 2027

TSMC is planning to shut down Fab 2, its oldest operational 6-inch wafer facility, in 2027. Originally opened in 1990, the closure will make Fab 3, which manufactures MEMS devices, the oldest remaining site in the company's manufacturing network. The tweet also notes the history of Fab 1, which was founded in 1987 via ITRI.

Context

The world’s largest foundry, TSMC, has officially announced it will decommission its 6-inch wafer facility, Fab 2, by the end of 2027. Located in the Hsinchu Science Park, Fab 2 began operations in 1990 and currently serves as the company’s oldest active manufacturing site. This move marks the complete phase-out of 150mm wafer production from TSMC’s portfolio as the company pivots toward modernizing its legacy infrastructure and prioritizing high-demand advanced nodes. The decision impacts key automotive and industrial clients, including NXP Semiconductors, which has already issued discontinuation notices for products sourced from the site. TSMC is providing a two-year transition window for customers to conduct last-time buys or migrate designs to 8-inch or 12-inch facilities. This consolidation is driven by operational efficiency, as the company scales up 2nm mass production at Fab 20 and Fab 22, alongside its aggressive expansion in Arizona and Japan to meet global AI and high-performance computing needs.
