TSMC reallocates 4nm and 5nm production capacity to 3nm to address AI chip shortages
Sunday, March 29, 2026 at 03:34 AM
TSMC is reportedly reconfiguring its 4nm and 5nm production lines to increase 3nm wafer capacity in response to persistent supply shortages and a growing backlog of orders for AI chips. This strategic shift is intended to support high demand from customers like Broadcom and is expected to help manage supply constraints through 2028. The company previously indicated it would optimize capacity across nodes, including converting 5nm lines to 3nm, to support its forecast of 50% compound annual growth for AI accelerator revenue over the next five years.
Context
In a strategic move to alleviate the chronic silicon shortage, TSMC has begun reallocating production capacity from 4nm and 5nm nodes to the oversubscribed 3nm family. This shift responds to an insatiable demand for AI accelerators and cloud data center ASICs from tier-one clients like Broadcom, Apple, and Nvidia. Market analysts expect 3nm utilization to exceed 100% through the second half of 2026, as the industry transitions toward high-volume production of next-generation chips like Nvidia’s Rubin and Amazon’s Trainium3.
This capacity pivot is critical as TSMC forecasts a mid-to-high 50% CAGR for AI-related revenue between 2024 and 2029. To support this growth, the company has ramped its 2026 capital expenditure guidance to a range of $52 billion to $56 billion, with up to 80% dedicated to advanced technologies. While TSMC is steering some mobile customers toward the newly launched 2nm node to optimize costs, the immediate focus remains on clearing a massive 3nm order backlog that could persist into 2028.
