Toshiba develops evaluation method for next-generation high-capacity nearline hard drives
Thursday, January 22, 2026 at 05:40 AM
Toshiba has developed a new evaluation method to support the advancement of next-generation high-capacity nearline hard disk drives, targeting data center storage infrastructure requirements.
Context
Toshiba has developed a specialized evaluation method to accelerate the production of next-generation, high-capacity nearline hard disk drives. This technical breakthrough allows for more precise analysis of magnetic recording stability, a critical bottleneck for scaling drive capacity beyond 30TB. By optimizing the reliability of high-density media, Toshiba aims to streamline the development of its upcoming 30TB+ drives using Heat-Assisted (HAMR) and Microwave-Assisted (MAMR) technologies.
This advancement is vital for the AI and cloud infrastructure sectors, which face a massive surge in data storage requirements. As data centers scale for generative AI workloads, demand for cost-effective nearline HDDs remains robust despite rising competition from Seagate and Western Digital. Toshiba’s focus on yield-improving evaluation methods strengthens its position as it targets 35TB capacities by 2025 and aims for 40TB and beyond by 2026, addressing a market currently constrained by tight supply and long lead times.
