Lumentum management discussed their optical technology roadmap and AI infrastructure demand during a talk at the OFC conference.

Context

On March 17, 2026, Lumentum Holdings Inc. hosted an investor briefing at the Optical Fiber Communication Conference (OFC) in Los Angeles to address the critical role of optical networking in scaling AI infrastructure. The company showcased its latest innovations, including a 1.6T DR4 OSFP transceiver prototype and a 800 mW super-high-power laser designed for co-packaged optics. These technologies target the "laser bottleneck" in the AI value chain, where Lumentum currently commands roughly 50-60% of the global market for electro-absorption modulated lasers (EMLs). During the briefing, management highlighted that demand for high-speed optical components continues to outpace production capacity. CEO Michael Hurlston previously noted that the company was "undershipping our customers’ demand by somewhere around 30%" despite significant capacity expansions. This supply imbalance has granted Lumentum substantial pricing power, with revenue reaching $665 million—a 65% year-over-year increase—as customers sign long-term agreements through 2027 to secure priority supply of the lasers essential for 800G and 1.6T networking.
