Information has surfaced regarding Intel's upcoming 900-series chipsets, including the Z990, Z970, W980, Q970, and B960, which are designed to support the future Nova Lake-S desktop processor architecture.

Context

Intel is accelerating its desktop roadmap with the leaked 900-series chipset lineup, featuring the flagship Z990, the enthusiast Z970, and the mainstream B960, alongside workstation-class W980 and Q970 models. These chipsets are designed for the upcoming Nova Lake-S desktop CPUs, which are slated for launch in late 2026 or early 2027. The platform introduces a new LGA 1954 socket, forcing a motherboard upgrade cycle that signals a significant architectural shift away from current hardware. For investors, this transition represents Intel’s most aggressive attempt to reclaim the performance crown from AMD. The Nova Lake-S architecture is expected to more than double core counts to a maximum of 52 cores (16 performance and 32 efficiency cores) while utilizing the advanced Intel 18A process node. By incorporating a new "Big Last-Level Cache" to compete with AMD’s 3D V-Cache, Intel aims to fortify its margins in the high-end gaming and AI workstation segments, which are critical for stabilizing long-term client computing revenue.
