Nordic Semiconductor and OQ Technology have successfully demonstrated the direct transmission of NB-IoT data to low Earth orbit satellites.
Context
Nordic Semiconductor and OQ Technology have achieved a major industry milestone by successfully demonstrating direct-to-satellite NB-IoT data transmission. Using the nRF9151 cellular IoT module, the teams established a seamless end-to-end link with a Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite constellation without requiring hardware modifications. This validates the commercial readiness of 3GPP-compliant Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN), effectively bridging the connectivity gap for the 75% of the Earth's surface currently lacking terrestrial cellular coverage.
This development accelerates the deployment of high-volume satellite IoT solutions across the logistics, energy, and environmental monitoring sectors. As the global NB-IoT market is projected to grow to $41.5 billion by 2030 at a 31% CAGR, the transition to universal "plug-and-play" connectivity acts as a significant catalyst for the semiconductor supply chain. Investors should monitor how this expansion benefits diversified leaders like Will Semiconductor, whose expanding RF and power management portfolios are increasingly integrated into the high-growth 5G and AIoT infrastructure landscape throughout 2025.
