SoftBank and AMD to collaborate on GPU management systems for efficient AI operations
Monday, February 16, 2026 at 09:21 AM
SoftBank and AMD have announced a collaboration to jointly verify a GPU management system designed to optimize the operation and efficiency of AI data centers.
Context
SoftBank Group and AMD have entered a strategic partnership to develop and verify advanced GPU management systems designed to optimize AI data center operations. This collaboration focuses on software-driven solutions that improve power efficiency and resource allocation across massive clusters of AI chips. By integrating AMD hardware with SoftBank’s operational expertise, the firms aim to significantly reduce the high energy costs and technical complexity that currently act as bottlenecks for large-scale generative AI deployment.
This initiative is a core component of SoftBank’s broader ambition to build a massive global AI infrastructure, supported by a planned $100 billion investment in chips and energy. For AMD, the deal provides a vital high-profile platform to showcase its Instinct series accelerators as a viable, cost-effective alternative to Nvidia’s hardware, which currently holds roughly 90% of the market. Joint verification is expected to roll out across SoftBank’s Japanese data centers through 2025 and 2026, targeting operational efficiency gains of up to 30%.
