Context
On March 24, 2026, SK hynix announced a record-breaking order for extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography equipment from ASML, valued at 11.95 trillion won ($7.97 billion). This represents the largest single public order ever disclosed by an ASML customer, equivalent to nearly 10% of SK hynix’s total assets. The acquisition, which spans through December 2027, is designed to cement the company’s leadership in the AI memory market by securing the tools necessary for mass-producing next-generation semiconductors.
The investment is specifically targeted at accelerating the transition to the 1c (6th-generation 10nm) DRAM process and supporting the production of HBM4, the high-bandwidth memory essential for Nvidia AI accelerators. Equipment will be deployed at the M15X plant in Cheongju and the upcoming Yongin mega-fab, which is slated to open in February 2027. This massive capital outlay follows SK hynix’s successful 2025 assembly of the industry’s first commercial High NA EUV system, signaling a long-term aggressive expansion to meet surging AI infrastructure demand.
