SK Hynix has announced a $15 billion investment to construct new manufacturing facilities in Yongin. The company plans to significantly increase the scale of this investment to expand production capacity earlier than originally scheduled.
Context
SK Hynix is moving forward with a 9.4 trillion won ($6.8 billion) investment to develop the first phase of its semiconductor mega-cluster in Yongin. This represents the initial stage of a massive 120 trillion won long-term plan to construct four separate fabrication plants at the site. Following the project’s groundbreaking in March 2025, the company is on track to complete the first facility by May 2027. The site will primarily focus on producing next-generation DRAM, specifically High Bandwidth Memory (HBM), to satisfy the extreme demand from the global AI industry.
This expansion is a critical strategic move to secure a dominant position in the AI supply chain. By integrating over 50 equipment and material suppliers within the same cluster, SK Hynix aims to maximize manufacturing efficiency and minimize logistics costs. This unprecedented scale is designed to ensure the company remains the primary supplier for AI chip leaders while providing the necessary capacity to outpace competitors in the high-performance memory market.
