Sony Group and Tokyo Electron back industry proposal to increase female workforce participation in Japanese semiconductor sector

A coalition including Sony Group and Tokyo Electron has released a proposal focused on increasing female participation in the Japanese semiconductor workforce to address long-term labor shortages and industry competitiveness.

Context

Industry leaders Sony Group and Tokyo Electron have officially joined a strategic proposal to boost female participation in Japan’s semiconductor workforce. This initiative, highlighted in March 2026, addresses a critical talent shortage as Japan moves to revitalize its domestic chip industry. While global semiconductor firms typically see female representation between 20% and 29%, technical roles in Japan have historically trailed behind, often dipping into the low teens. This push for gender diversity is essential for Japan’s goal of reclaiming its position as a global chip leader, particularly as the Rapidus consortium aims for mass production of 2nm chips by 2027. Tokyo Electron alone has expressed plans to hire roughly 10,000 new employees over five years to meet demand, making the inclusion of women a vital economic necessity rather than just a social goal. By integrating inclusive design and dedicated networking for female engineers, these companies aim to secure the 1 million additional workers needed globally by 2030.
