Amazon has acquired 1.2 GW of solar power capacity and 1.2 GW of energy storage to support its infrastructure needs.

Context

Amazon has received court approval to acquire the massive Sunstone solar-plus-storage project in Oregon for $83 million. The deal, finalized in January 2026 through a bankruptcy auction, grants the company direct ownership of a shovel-ready site featuring 1.2 GW of solar generation and 1.2 GW of battery energy storage. This acquisition marks a significant strategic pivot for Amazon, moving from its traditional model of long-term power purchase agreements toward direct ownership of utility-scale energy assets. The move is a critical tactical response to severe power shortages and utility bottlenecks that have previously stalled Amazon’s regional data center expansion. By controlling its own energy infrastructure, the company bypasses grid constraints and secures the massive, reliable electricity supply required for high-density AI and supercomputing workloads. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2026, with the initial 200 MW phase projected for completion by November 2027, providing the necessary power backbone for the next generation of semiconductor-intensive AI infrastructure.
