Alibaba Group has unveiled a new AI semiconductor developed using advanced 5nm process technology. The chip is designed to enhance the development and operation of autonomous AI agents. Production for this specialized AI hardware is expected to be outsourced to TSMC.

Context

On March 24, 2026, Alibaba revealed its next-generation XuanTie C950 processor, a 5-nanometer server chip built on the open-source RISC-V architecture. Developed by its semiconductor arm, T-Head, the chip is designed to power agentic AI and high-performance cloud systems. Billed at the DAMO Academy conference as the "highest performing RISC-V CPU in the world," the 3.2 GHz processor reportedly performs more than three times faster than its predecessor, the C920. This launch coincides with Alibaba's introduction of Wukong, an AI-native platform for enterprise automation. While Alibaba did not officially disclose its foundry partner, industry sources indicate production is being outsourced to TSMC. This collaboration is significant as TSMC recently reached volume production for 2nm technology in late 2025, yet continues to support advanced 5nm designs for Chinese tech giants under strictly monitored US export licenses. The move marks a critical milestone in China’s pursuit of semiconductor independence, leveraging RISC-V to bypass traditional licensing fees and Western instruction set dependencies during a period of intensifying global AI hardware competition.
