Fujitsu has announced plans to develop its own 1.4nm-class semiconductors optimized for high-performance AI processing. This initiative aims to enhance the company's capabilities in the AI infrastructure and data center market.

Context

On March 31, 2026, Fujitsu announced its roadmap for developing a specialized AI processor using an ultra-advanced 1.4nm manufacturing process. The chip, code-named FUJITSU-MONAKA-X, is being designed as a high-performance, energy-efficient successor to the company's current data center CPU. This development is a cornerstone of Japan's strategy to achieve semiconductor sovereignty, with the intention to keep both development and production entirely domestic. This technology is slated to power FugakuNEXT, the successor to Japan’s world-renowned Fugaku supercomputer. Targeted for practical deployment by 2029, the 1.4nm processor aims to deliver a 100-fold performance boost for AI and high-performance computing workloads. Fujitsu is reportedly considering a partnership with the state-backed foundry Rapidus for domestic fabrication, positioning the project to rival the advanced nodes of industry leaders like TSMC and Samsung.
