TSMC is developing its Arizona semiconductor production site across approximately 1,100 acres with an estimated total investment of $165 billion.

Context

TSMC is significantly expanding its Arizona semiconductor footprint, with total projected costs reaching $165 billion for a sprawling 1,100-acre complex in North Phoenix. This "gigafab" cluster now includes plans for six fabrication plants, two advanced packaging facilities, and a dedicated research center. The first facility achieved high-volume production of 4nm chips in late 2024, marking a pivotal shift in the AI supply chain by bringing advanced manufacturing to U.S. soil. The expansion is moving at an accelerated pace to meet intense demand from key partners like NVIDIA and Apple. While initial timelines projected a 2028 start for the second facility, mass production of 3nm technology is now expected by 2027, with 2nm and A16 nodes following by the end of the decade. Backed by $6.6 billion in direct funding under the U.S. CHIPS Act, this project serves as a strategic hedge against geographic concentration risks and a cornerstone for the domestic production of next-generation AI processors.
