SK Hynix accelerates M15X mass production by four months to lead HBM4 market

Monday, December 8, 2025 at 01:51 AM

SK Hynix has decided to accelerate the mass production timeline for its M15X fab by four months. This move is specifically aimed at increasing capacity to secure a leading position in the HBM4 market.

Context

SK Hynix is fast-tracking the operational timeline for its new M15X fabrication plant in Cheongju, pulling forward mass production by four months to June 2025. Originally slated for an October start, this strategic acceleration aims to cement the company’s dominance in the high-stakes High Bandwidth Memory market. By shortening the construction and equipment installation phases, the South Korean chipmaker is positioning itself to lead the industry-wide transition to next-generation HBM4 technology. This aggressive move is a direct response to the surging demand for AI memory required by NVIDIA’s upcoming Blackwell and Rubin GPU architectures. Representing an investment of approximately 20 trillion won, the M15X facility will serve as a critical production hub for HBM4, featuring advanced 12-layer and 16-layer configurations. This accelerated ramp-up allows SK Hynix to secure a capacity advantage over competitors like Samsung Electronics and Micron as the AI supply chain moves toward more complex, customized memory solutions.
