Meta is constructing a massive data center powered by gas turbines with a capacity exceeding 200MW.

Context

NextEra Energy has announced significant strategic partnerships and an acquisition, underscoring its aggressive expansion into powering data centers and strengthening its natural gas capabilities. The company is collaborating with Google on a multi-gigawatt data center campus partnership, building on an existing 3.5 GW of operational or contracted capacity. Similarly, Meta has signed 2.5 GW of clean energy contracts with NextEra, with projects expected online between 2026 and 2028. Further bolstering its data center strategy, NextEra has an LOI with Comstock to build up to 8 GW of new generation, with initial power as early as 2027, and an MOU with Basin Electric for a 1.5 GW combined-cycle plant. A partnership with ExxonMobil aims for an initial 1.2 GW carbon-abated gas plant. In a move to expand its natural gas footprint, NextEra Energy Resources is set to acquire Symmetry Energy Solutions, a major U.S. competitive gas supplier serving approximately 5,500 large commercial and industrial customers and 80,000 residential customers across 34 states, with the acquisition expected to close in Q1 2026. Additionally, NextEra Energy Transmission (NEET) and Exelon are partnering on PJM transmission projects representing up to $1.7 billion in investment, designed to facilitate over 7 GW of power generation. These initiatives collectively position NextEra for substantial growth in critical energy sectors.
