Qualcomm has reportedly acquired Ventana Micro Systems, a move expected to strengthen its position in high-performance RISC-V CPU design for data centers and automotive applications.

Context

In December 2025, Qualcomm announced the acquisition of Ventana Micro Systems, a prominent designer of high-performance RISC-V CPUs. While financial terms were not disclosed, the deal strategically integrates Ventana's team and its portfolio of 48 patents into Qualcomm's specialized Oryon CPU division. This move is designed to deepen the company's commitment to the open-standard RISC-V ecosystem, providing a critical alternative to Arm's architecture amid ongoing licensing complexities. Analyst Ian Cutress of More Than Moore highlights that the acquisition serves as a vital "acqui-hire" to shore up engineering leadership following the recent departures of key Nuvia founders. By folding Ventana's expertise in high-performance, energy-efficient cores into its roadmap, Qualcomm aims to maintain its edge in the AI-driven data center and automotive sectors. The transition is expected to conclude in early 2026, marking a pivotal shift toward long-term hardware independence and architectural flexibility.
