Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang says AI agents cannot replace the physical engineering and manufacturing of chips
Sunday, March 29, 2026 at 06:00 PM
During an appearance at the SIEPR Economic Summit, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang dismissed the idea that 100,000 AI agents could replace the physical manufacturing and complex engineering required to build Nvidia chips. He emphasized the physical reality of chip manufacturing and infrastructure over purely software-driven agentic workflows.
Context
At the GTC 2026 conference on March 16, 2026, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang clarified the limits of autonomous technology, stating that while AI agents will dominate digital workflows, they cannot replace the physical complexities of semiconductor production. Addressing the potential for full automation, Huang remarked, "Now, the odds of 100,000 of those agents building NVIDIA is zero percent." This statement emphasizes the ongoing necessity of human-led engineering and hardware manufacturing despite the company’s aggressive push into agentic software.
While Huang predicts Nvidia's internal workforce will eventually be supported by 7.5 million AI agents working around the clock, he maintains that "physical AI"—the intersection of robotics and manufacturing—requires real-world infrastructure that software alone cannot replicate. This context is critical for investors as Nvidia rolls out its Agent Toolkit and partners with industrial giants like Samsung, TSMC, and Siemens to integrate AI into existing fab environments rather than attempting to fully automate the creation of next-generation silicon like the Blackwell or Vera Rubin architectures.
