Kyocera to pivot idle Kagoshima Sendai plant from organic substrates to ceramic components
Thursday, April 2, 2026 at 10:27 AM
Kyocera is repurposing its new Kagoshima Sendai plant, which was completed in October 2023 but remained idle. Due to weak demand for organic substrates, the facility will now be converted to increase production of ceramic components. The ramp-up for these semiconductor ceramic parts is scheduled to begin between October 2026 and March 2027.
Context
Kyocera is pivoting the strategy for its Sendai Plant Campus in Kagoshima, opting to produce ceramic components instead of the originally planned organic substrates. The facility, known as Plant No. 23, was completed in October 2023 as the company's largest domestic factory but remained idle due to a persistent slump in demand for organic packaging materials. This market downturn was exacerbated by a miscalculation of the rapid shift in data center demand from general-purpose hardware to AI-specific infrastructure, leading Kyocera to focus on higher-margin ceramic alternatives.
The new production plan involves a phased rollout starting in October 2026, with full operations expected by March 2027. The plant will now manufacture fine ceramic components for semiconductor processing equipment and ceramic packages, such as those used in all-solid-state batteries. This shift aligns with Kyocera’s broader management reform aimed at improving its Return on Equity (ROE) to 8% by 2031. By repurposing the idle capacity, the company seeks to capitalize on the growing demand for high-performance ceramics in the AI chip supply chain and power electronics.
