Samsung Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition fails third-party durability bend test
Thursday, December 25, 2025 at 08:40 PM
Samsung's latest foldable device, the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition (referred to as the TriFold in some regions), has failed a durability bend test conducted by a popular tech reviewer.
Context
Samsung’s pioneering Galaxy Z TriFold failed the JerryRigEverything structural bend test on December 25, 2025, becoming the first of the company’s foldables to snap under reverse pressure. The device’s 3.9mm ultra-thin frame and dual-hinge, 10-inch display gave way during the evaluation, revealing structural limits for the new tri-folding form factor. This setback is notable as previous ultra-slim models, including the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition, had successfully passed similar stress tests earlier in the year.
The failure threatens Samsung’s premium brand prestige as it defends its 64% foldable market share against intensifying competition and Apple’s expected 2026 entry into the segment. While the TriFold is a limited "technology pilot" with global sales targets of just 30,000 to 40,000 units, it was intended to justify the hardware’s $2,500 price point. With 2025 production targets for the mass-market Z Fold 7 series already cut by 39% to roughly 5 million units, this durability issue could further dampen consumer confidence in high-end foldable innovations.
