TSMC expects full operational recovery today after earthquake-induced shutdown

Sunday, December 28, 2025 at 01:26 AM

TSMC aims to fully restore operations today following a 7.0-magnitude earthquake on Saturday, December 27, which triggered an emergency shutdown at its facilities.

Context

TSMC is reportedly navigating localized preparation delays at its Hsinchu facility, the lead site for the upcoming 2nm process. While these hurdles may slow the equipment rollout for next-generation nodes, operations in Tainan remain stable. This provides a critical safety net for Nvidia and Broadcom, whose current AI and networking chip volumes are concentrated in southern Taiwan's 3nm and 4nm lines, shielding them from immediate supply disruptions. The potential bottleneck primarily threatens the Apple supply chain, as the company remains the anchor customer for the 2nm transition. Any delay at Hsinchu could shift the production window for the iPhone 18 and its next-generation A20 processor, currently slated for a 2026 launch. TSMC continues to direct nearly $42 billion in annual capital expenditure toward advanced nodes, aiming to maintain a late 2025 mass production target despite these regional logistical challenges.
