Hanmi Semiconductor and Hanwha Semitech Continue Legal Battle Over Patent Disputes

Wednesday, December 10, 2025 at 09:07 AM

Hanmi Semiconductor and Hanwha Semitech are reportedly continuing their legal battle regarding patent disputes in the supply chain.

Context

The escalating patent dispute between Hanmi Semiconductor and Hanwha Semitech is significantly impacting the high-bandwidth memory (HBM) thermal compression (TC) bonder market. Hanmi, holding approximately 70% market share, sued Hanwha in December 2024, leading to a countersuit in October 2025. This legal battle coincides with SK Hynix's strategic diversification of HBM equipment suppliers, initiated in early 2025, which included substantial orders with Hanwha Semitech (e.g., 42 billion won and 21 billion won in April 2025) and testing equipment from ASMPT. Hanmi Semiconductor reported a 2.5x revenue surge in 2024, with operating profits of 255.4 billion won. With the TC bonder market projected to grow from $461 million in 2024 to $1.5 billion by 2027, investors should note that potential injunctions or supply disruptions could affect HBM production and pricing. The intensified competition, driven by SK Hynix's diversification and the involvement of ASMPT, will materially influence the revenue trajectories of both Hanmi and Hanwha.
