Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reports that TSMC's 2nm (N2) chip production is progressing well, with trial production scheduled for late 2024 and volume production expected to commence in 2025. This advanced node is anticipated to see high demand for both mobile and high-performance computing (HPC) applications.

Context

Semiconductor giant TSMC has officially confirmed that its 2nm (N2) technology entered mass production in Q4 2025, following successful trial production runs that began in late 2024. This milestone marks a critical shift from FinFET to nanosheet gate-all-around (GAA) transistors, delivering up to 15% performance gains or 35% improved power efficiency compared to the previous 3nm node. Apple is confirmed as the lead customer for the process, with its A-series chips for the iPhone 18 expected to be the first to utilize the node in 2026. To meet surging demand for AI and high-performance computing, TSMC is aggressively scaling capacity at its Hsinchu Baoshan and Kaohsiung facilities. The company projects a monthly output of 50,000 wafers by the end of 2025, expanding to 130,000 wafers per month by late 2026. This rapid ramp-up, which includes accelerated plans for 2nm production in Arizona, solidifies TSMC's dominance over rivals Samsung and Intel in the race for next-generation logic leadership.
