Microsoft confirms Anthropic products will remain available to customers following legal review

Microsoft lawyers have evaluated the legal designation regarding Anthropic and concluded that Claude AI models will remain available to Microsoft's customers.
Context
Following a U.S. Department of War designation labeling Anthropic a supply chain risk, Microsoft confirmed that it will continue offering Claude models to its commercial and non-defense government customers. After a legal review, Microsoft determined the restriction applies specifically to direct contracts with the Department of War, allowing the startup’s AI to remain integrated within Microsoft 365, GitHub, and Microsoft Foundry. Anthropic has announced its intention to challenge the government's designation in court, arguing the move is not legally sound.
This decision is critical for the AI supply chain as Microsoft, Google, and Amazon all maintain significant distribution partnerships with Anthropic. The friction began after Anthropic reportedly refused to allow its technology to be used for mass surveillance or fully autonomous weapons, leading to a pivot where OpenAI secured a deal for the Pentagon's classified workloads.
